The transport ministry (MoRTH) has proposed making the acoustic car alerting system (AVAS) obligatory for all electrical automobiles, buses and vehicles beginning October 2027.

For context, AVAS is a security function in EVs that emits non-disruptive sounds to alert pedestrians, cyclists and different weak street customers to the car’s presence. The system goals to forestall accidents attributable to lack of engine noise in quiet EVs.

As per a draft notification issued on September 25, the ministry mentioned that it plans to make the function obligatory for all new fashions of classes ‘M’ and ‘N’ of EVs, manufactured after October 2026.

Whereas class M contains automobiles and buses designed for passenger transport, class N contains vehicles and items automobiles. Notably, electrical two-wheelers and three-wheelers will not be reportedly coated by this mandate.
